Explorer Scouts {Explorers}

Explorer Scouts are the newest of the Scout Association's Sections.  An Explorer Scout Unit is open to 14 to 18 year olds.  The District has three Units which operate under the District's responsibility.  Members of a Unit plan their own programme as far as possible, reflecting their Scouting interests as they develop.

Explorer Scouts can work towards the Chief Scout's Diamond & Platinum Awards, but they are also encouraged to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme.  They can also train as young leaders.  On reaching 18, they move into the Cumbria Scout Network until their 25th birthday.

The senior awards - the Queen's Scout Award and the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award - may be gained by Explorer Scouts or by Network members.

Explorers may meet less frequently than Scouts, but usually for longer - sometimes for a whole day or weekend. Their operational bases are in Keswick, Appleby & Penrith, and Kirkby Stephen, but they often meet elsewhere for a specific activity.
